The story of the GM EV1 - from a time when Tesla EVs didn't exist
With keyless entry and keyless start, an extremely light construction, and convenient home charging, this is the story of the General Motors EV 1.
An all-electric car that gobbled up as much as 500 million dollars in development costs, was made from the ground-up as a standalone EV, and meant to show the world what good old GM was capable of.
But in the end, it all came crumbling down, quite literally. So stick around until the end of this video to find out the story of the controversial GM EV1 - the first-ever vehicle to wear the ‘General Motors’ nameplate, and at the same time, a car that was supposed to kickstart passenger electric vehicles for the masses in the early 1990s.

The story of Red Terror - the VW Beetle that conquered Antarctica
Просмотров 29 тыс.3 года назад
With winds of up to 100 miles per hour and temperatures that go as low as -58 degrees Fahrenheit, the frozen Antarctic isn’t exactly a welcoming place for the common man. That’s why in 1940, the huge Antarctic Snow Cruiser was deployed in the freezing South to act as a mobile exploration base. The problem is, that impressive machine failed miserably. And I have a complete video on it, which you...

The story of the 1956 Mack Trucks Arctic Expedition to build the DEW Line

11 Mack trucks, each with a 28-liter V12 Cummins diesel engine under the hood, hauling over three million pounds of cement and steel into the freezing Arctic Circle, 1,500 miles away from civilization. Sounds a bit crazy, doesn’t it? But amid the bleak 1950s, when North America was under the threat of a nuclear showdown with the Soviet Union, the West’s solution was the so-called Distant Early ...

The last 9-5 was nice outside but cheap inside. That said, if it weren't for me finally buying a pretty green, fully loaded 2001 9-5 v6 turbo (with it's pointless single "asymmetrical turbo" that was only there so some marketing wiz can say it's a "turbo Saab" inorder to uniform the line up, while trying to excuse a price premium that brought absolutely no performance benefits in exchange for ludicrous added complexity, and greatly reduced reliability) just to see it fall apart thanks to GM's self-destructive engineering, I may have still considered owning one someday. It's too bad that like the last 9-3, owning one of Saab's last vehicles would be self Sabotage, and so would owning an older Saab because any good parts are going to eventually dry up like flood water long after a storm. The loss is tragic, but GM didn't have any business owning a car company they couldn't understand. They were simply delaying an inevitable outcome under their stewardship. So long, Saab, you were the unique visions of passionate engineers who consistently resisted compromise. The reason you're gone is the reason you were awesome, and your loss will be solemnly felt by those smart enough to admire the genius in your products, when unbridled from commercial conversation.

Rode the Turbo a few times just for the dome view; could watch them drive. It was hard riding and bouncy, and the engines roared loudly when accelerating, performing less well compared with the service offered by the electrics. Turbines on wheeled vehicles never lived up to the hype. could do 120 MPH where the ACELA does 150 today but could go faster than same where there are speed restrictions due to sagging catenary on the 11Kv wires.

I grew up in town called Mckenzie/Linden, Guyana South, where it was a bauxite mining town.[1970-] My Dad was an engineer, (my dad studied a bit i think in OH re how to worked that Walking Dragaline) and he used to operate the Walking Dragline for a number of years. He will take me and sister to work with him sometimes to show us how that powerful machine works, we will stand in the cabin with him and watch him operate that heavy machinery, (we were about 13-14 years old). He will dig up that earth by spinning that hugh bucket into the ground. Me and my sister will climb up the ladder to the cabin and sit in it and enjoyed the beautiful lights on that machinery. It was amazing!! So sorry, there are no pictures to show, but the memories live on. RIP Dad. ❤

there were 2 segments/trips- Here to There- Chicago to panama- in 3 red, 1960 700 4 doors, all 80 hp 3 speed. all the cars and trucks finished that first expedition. then they followed up in 1961 going from Panama through the Darien gap, to the tip of south America. that was named "Daring the Darien". 3 new red 1961 model 700 4 doors were used. it is one of the 61's that is still in the jungle; all 3 corvairs *did* make to the marker of south America. once that goal had been reached, Chevrolet was 'done' with the expedition, and the nearest GM affiliate was told they could have the battered cars & trucks if they went and got them. one of the cars either broke or was badly damaged during that attempt, and without the knowledge or parts that accompanied the official "Chevrolet" part of the trip it was simply left where it stopped. the other 2 corvairs and trucks were successfully driven out. the expedition began at Dick Doane Chevrolet in Elgin Il. the drivers were mechanics at the dealership. we were fortunate to have 2 of the original drivers give a presentation to us at the 1987 CORSA Convention which was held in the NW suburbs of Chicago.

Hello from Malaysia. I had a beautiful white 1989 E34, but it was getting long in the tooth, and I was looking for a replacement. My late dad was a Mercedes-Benz man. He had the W115, W123 (two generations) and W124. So there I was in a dealership, poking around for a W211, which I thought Daimler-Benz finally got the E-Class right after the oddity of the W210. I had seen the E60 before and, like many who first saw it, I thought "what an ugly mistake by BMW". But my wife, 11 years my junior, liked the E60. She insisted that I test-drive both the W211 and the E60, to check out the drive and systems first before deciding. After the test-drive, I decided that the BMW is a much better car. I got a straight-six 525i in diamond black. Over time, it grew on me. Today, it still looks contemporary and not as old as the W211. I love looking at it. The car is 20 years old now. I am restoring it. I just had the entire front suspension replaced, and the engine mountings, and the gearbox was re-built. It is such a wonderful drive again. Next, it just needs repainting.
